My favourite coffee shops in Durban

Coffee culture in Durban (and surrounding areas) has grown in leaps and bounds over the past couple of years. There are myriad coffee shops and cafés in the greater Durban area, boasting interesting décor, fabulous coffee and food, and a loyal following of late-onset hipsters.

Enjoying a cup of tea at The Glenwood Bakery.

There’s loads to do in Durban, but one of my favourite things to do is meet with friends and visit coffee shops. Here are some of my favourites:

Antique Café

Antique Café is mismatched furnishings and a peaceful, eclectic ambience.

Antique Café, located in Windermere, is a real gem in the city. Here you’ll find eclectic furnishings, funky artwork and curiosities, and a hidden garden oasis at the back where you can sit under the trees and feel miles away from the hustle and bustle.

Opt for the outdoor seating and enjoy Durbs’s year-round good weather.

The food is inventive and tasty, and they serve coffee from Durban’s own Colombo Coffee and Tea.

Vintage-style teacups add to the eclectic vibe of Antique Café.

Bona Terra

Bona Terra’s inviting entrance.

If you’re willing to travel slightly further afield, Bona Terra up in Assagay is an amazing venue tucked away in the countryside. Featuring multiple play areas for kids, duck ponds, a rose garden and much more, Bona Terra is the perfect place to feel connected to nature as you sip on a hot cup of coffee or tea. 10/10 would recommend.

Bona Terra is a great family location, with plenty of space for the kids to play and run around.

Once you’ve had your coffee, take a walk around the premises, you’ll find two nurseries and shops full of second-hand treasures.

Bloomsberry Café

Bloosmberry Café is a chic and welcoming coffee shop and restaurant in Hillcrest.

Another one up in the hills, Bloomsberry is worth the trek for their comprehensive selection of coffees, including some really unique coffees, including The Hipster (two shots of hot espresso, poured above slices of lime on ice occasionally served with a touch of milk), and something called a Zebra Mocha (a standard mocha with a mixture of white and dark chocolate shavings).

Bonus: dogs are welcome at Bloomsberry! This is my dog, Cappuccino.

Freshly baked bread is available at Bloomsberry every day and the coffee shop/restaurant hosts regular specials like ladies’ nights and dance classes too.

The Glenwood Bakery

The Glenwood Bakery is an institution in Durban.

Last but certainly not least, The Glenwood Bakery is something of an institution in Glenwood, loved by older newspaper-reading clientele and young designer-types with Macbooks alike.

The interior of The Glenwood Bakery is minimalist and charming.

Coffee afficionados will tell you that The Glenwood Bakery has some of the best coffee around. They also serve simple but flavourful food. The bakery sells freshly-baked breads (six different kinds are produced on a daily basis) and pastries just out the oven.
